Digital Submission Guidelines

Submitting Images

All images should be submitted via one of the following:

  1. CD-ROM
  2. DVD
  3. Portable, external hard drive (Contact us prior to submitting an external hard drive)

DVD and CD-ROM submissions will not be returned.

Submission Basics

All images must be submitted according to the following guidelines:

  1. Uncompressed TIFF format (no jpegs will be accepted)
  2. Embedded with Adobe RGB 1998 Color profile (sRGB will not be accepted)
  3. Contain 8 bits/channel (converting from 16 bit after color correcting is acceptable and recommend).
  4. Images should be at a resolution of 300 dpi with a minimum file size of 24 MB.
    • Contact us prior to submitting if your image size does not fall in this category.
  5. Images should contain no layers or alpha channels.
  6. Images should not be interpolated (upsized) using Photoshop's bicubic smoother, Genuine Fractals or any similar programs. We are aware that digital images lend themselves well to being interpolated and will make such changes on an as needed basis. We use a specific formula for this process to obtain maximum results and any interpolating done by the photographer prior to this may make it impossible for us to achieve the desired results. This could ultimately effect the sale of your image.

Image Quality

All images must be in ready to upload condition.

  1. Images should be free from dust, scratches, cloning marks, pixilation, and any other computer-enhanced errors. We suggest viewing images at 100% magnification to avoid such problems.
  2. Images should not be sharpened. Over sharpened images may show grain and/or cause noise. Images are sent to clients in their unsharpened format to allow them to sharpen as needed for optimum printing conditions.
  3. Digital images obtained from scanning 35 mm slides should be free from black or jagged edges.

Caption File

All images should include a caption file according to one of the following methods:

  1. Tab-delimited file (Excel sheet or comparable) with headers that include, photographer ID number, caption (including scientific name when applicable) and keywords.
  2. Embedded under file info (fields to use include document title (your id number), Description (caption), keywords, copyright status, and copyright notice (photographer name).

The following is a list of recommended digital cameras that are capable of producing a professional quality image.

  • Canon EOS 1D II
